A massive number of firetrucks paraded in front of his front porch to say happy birthday! Mr Grier was one of the first 8 Black firefighters ever to join the fire department in Winston-Salem and served for 30 years. Robert Grier joined the Winston-Salem Fire Department in 1951, more than a decade before racial segregation was outlawed in the United States. When asked if it was hard to integrate he said, "Matter of fact, I think we had fun integrating. We all got together and decided we were going to do this."
