How do you hire an insane video editor? We've hired 250+ video editors for Fortune 500s, startups, and creators. And every month we review 1,000+ applications. Here’s exactly how we filter the top 1%: Stages: 1. Portfolio 2. Test 3. Trial STAGE 1: PORTFOLIO The first stage is the simplest: Every applicant submits their portfolio — that’s it. We want to make it as easy as possible to apply. But…the portfolio is tricky because you’re missing a lot of info like editing time, inspiration, communication, etc. All we’re looking for here is 1 “WOW” factor: For example: -1 animation -1 motion graphic -1 sound effect -1 transition We just need 1 amazing factor to see ~potential~ Typically, we’ll filter 80% of applicants at this stage. STAGE 2: PAID TEST Now is the real test — create a sample edit from scratch. Think of this like our SAT. A standardized test to compare applicants. The test should be simple: -4 hours -Only provide raw assets + inspiration -Deliver within 5 days 4 hours is perfect because it won't break your budget. Plus editors with a full-time job already (typically the best) can do this after work or on the weekend. But…beware of micromanaging. Don’t provide 5 pages of your exact editing guidelines — just give inspiration + assets. We wanna truly test their taste. STAGE 3: TRIAL Once you get the sample back, there are a few common red flags like... - Over editing - Bad sound design - Cheesy b-roll 1 red flag is not critical — because it’s easy to fix. But multiple red flags = rejection. Our rule of thumb: Could we post this video as is? If so, immediate hire. If almost, we’ll do a 2-week trial period to see if they can dial it in with feedback. Pro tip: Chunk the trial into daily reviews. This way you can asses skills 10x faster. Watch our full breakdown below:
