@FryRsquared A genuinely loved this episode. The house erupted into laughter. I could see the twinkle in your eye. It’s the same one I have with my students. I’m just waiting for the penny to drop.

Oh I know *exactly* what I’m doing 😝
David Baddiel@Baddiel

Watching @FryRsquared explain the microwave. There’s a bit where she says that the inventor had a candy bar in his pocket and an early version of the machine “melted his nut cluster.” There’s not even an oo-er.

@PhDVoice There is some cases a raw abuse of power. I’ve come across a case recently where it feels like the student was set up to fail. I can’t reveal details but the lab wasn’t prepared for the study and didn’t want to. Now student is stuck

I think a major reason why so many feel let down by academia (and research) is that academia is supposed to be the place where truth reigns supreme, and it doesn’t matter who you are, the truth is the only thing that matters. But, academia is still hierarchical so the truth can still be superseded by power if those with power wish. #PhDVoice @PostdocVoice

@PhDVoice Evidence. Learn to say no and focus as much as you can on your Phd. I appreciate this is difficult. Remember that this is a lot about them and not just about you.

@PhDVoice I suspect he may be telling all of the students this because he sounds like a bully stop. The best defence you can have is to take notes of all the work you are doing, document everything, especially if he asks you to work on side projects. This way you can come back with

Anonymous question “My supervisor is always telling me how disappointing is my progress as a PhD student, sometimes he compares myself to the other students from the lab, to be honest I don’t know how normal it is. I usually cry after our meetings and I always feel super nervous before. I tried to explain him how hard has been for me this start (I’m a 1st PhD student, like 3 months old). Usually our talks are about how bad I’m on the progress and he telling me that I’m not motivated enough to do the work. Probably is just me and I need to work different, probably I’m just being too sensitive and it is his way to push me” #PhDVoice @PostdocVoice

Springer nature, certainly can’t save the world. They can’t even keep a database confidential. Thank you for informing me that you’ve been hacked and that you have leaked all our information. Information I did not actually supply but that you took from another source.

Who can save the world? In this #SocSciMatters blog, Jonathan Michie, co-editor of @Palgrave's 'Why the Social Sciences Matter' discusses the vital role of the social sciences in addressing the current threats and opportunities facing society: bit.ly/3RjlIQq

I didn`t start my academic career until I was 30. I didn`t obtain my PhD until I was 35. At 20, I thought my life was over🎗️ At 42, I know it`s just the beginning & I signed the contract for my permanent position (tenure track/ assistant professor). It is never too late to start.

@Write_n_Publish No, it is for any Dutch academic. Regardless of where they publish. Within six months, they can make their publication open access.

@AcademicAunt Interesting. Did they introduce this publishing law as part of the EU set of open-access laws or is it solely for the Netherlands' journals?
