You can absolutely argue another anime was better for you personally. That’s completely fair, I guess. What gets annoying is the mindset that Solo Leveling winning was somehow impossible or invalid, like it only happened because people ‘don’t understand anime.’ Clearly enough people connected with it for it to win over a stacked lineup. The show had insane mainstream reach, nonstop online engagement, memorable action scenes, strong music, huge audience hype, and massive momentum throughout the year. I also hate the way people use the word ‘deserved’ in award discussions. Nobody is automatically owed Anime of the Year because certain fans personally preferred another series. Awards are earned through reception, impact, execution, and voting. Solo Leveling earned enough support to beat the competition. People still being salty about it a year later doesn’t change that.
