The cultural rule that serious reading must happen sitting still at a desk actively harms ADHD readers. The hyperactive component of ADHD does not disappear just because you opened a textbook. Forcing your body to stay still consumes the exact executive function you need to process the text. Read walking on a treadmill, standing at a counter, or lying on the floor. Let your body move so your mind can settle.

Why most speed reading advice is a scam (and why I spent a year building an app anyway). Let's be honest: You cannot biologically read an entire page at a glance. If you try, you usually just end up rereading the same paragraph for twenty minutes because your working memory has gone on strike. My daughter was drowning in her school studies, and traditional reading apps were actively making it worse. They were no good for neurodivergent brains that experience visual fatigue. So, I decided to build a study companion that respects cognitive diversity instead of fighting it. Meet Accruva. It’s an app that adapts text to the way your brain actually works, rather than forcing your brain to adapt to the text. It includes: • 5 Reading Modes: Focus, Teleprompter, Chunking, Bold Flow, and Scroll. • SM-2 Spaced Repetition: Flashcards that test your retention exactly when you are about to forget. • AI Summaries: For when you just need the gist before your next lecture or meeting. Here is the catch: Accessibility is a principle, not a premium feature. Every single accessibility tool and reading mode in Accruva is permanently free. We fund our development through our Pro tier (which offers unlimited document imports and 150 AI generations a day)—not by paywalling the basic tools that make reading possible. We do not promise you will magically read 10,000 words a minute. We promise a tool that stops you from wanting to throw your phone at the wall. Most speed reading advice is just bad skimming with marketing attached. Rayner's 2009 review established that the perceptual span in English is about 14 to 15 characters to the right of fixation. That is roughly three to four words. There is no technique that magically expands this biological limit to let you read entire pages at a glance. What you can do is train your peripheral vision and reduce the number of times your eyes unnecessarily regress over the same line. This is why Accruva relies on automatic chunked reading groups and visual anchors rather than promising impossible metrics. In fact, we cap our free tier at 400 WPM because the research shows comprehension drops significantly above that limit for most adults. Speed reading should be about comprehension and retention, not just raw velocity. Test My Reading Speed at accruva.app/reading-speed-….

As someone who has suffered some form of difficulty with reading and comprehension myself, I was compelled to help my daughter study for her exams. She is neurodivergent and struggles with processing large blocks of text. We tried to find an app for her to use, but none of them helped. So I decided to create one myself, and called it Accruva. I built an app that she could use, not only to help her read faster, but to also help her comprehend more of the information she read. Now she has full reading and learning independence. I have never been prouder. As for me, I thought I could pop on X and see if I could help others just like us!
