@Intel_Dork They literally come back from the dead to save their beloveds, what can possibly be more romantic than that?
English

Wild thing about the sliding kick: it comes from a movie that didn’t do so hot. Godzilla vs. Megalon was the first Godzilla film to sell under 1M tickets, and Toho immediately backed off cutting corners after. Somehow, it’s become the face of the Showa era in its series.

While admittedly there is genuinely lots of crazy ass & acky stuff on showa era tokusatsu I feel like their rep as a whole been really damaged by stuff like godzilla sliding kick, starfish hitler & co clips

@avidfilm Fair enough. The roles that Oddjob and Maul had within their respective films were completely different. Oddjob's portrayal on screen provided everything that the story required of him. Maul fails by not offering any ideological threat to the Jedi other than his presence.
English

@AceRumble Didn’t you and others accuse me from the beginning of not actually responding to criticisms? You’re basically doing the same with Oddjob.
English

@swoski_11 @Broncos4six I'm no fan of his, but by definition the best QB in the league is going to be the one who led his team to a Super Bowl win, it's not up to interpretation.
English

@AceRumble @Broncos4six Kudos to you for saying Darnold is the best in the NFL. I don’t agree but you do you man.
English

@avidfilm Again, the fact that you are unable to see the successful characterization of Oddjob vs. the unsuccessful characterization of Maul is something that you may need to take some film classes to understand if you don't already.
English

@AceRumble Darth Maul legitimately had more dialogue than Oddjob. I don’t know anything about Oddjob. His philosophy? His tastes? Nothing at all. And Maul’s role is to let the Jedi know that the Sith have come back.
English

@avidfilm It wouldn't be a bad origin story if it was actually used at all as part of Anakin's character development. His fear and hatred of slavery could have been used as the bait by which Sidious corrupts him to the Dark Side. If not used, there's no purpose to include it.
English

@AceRumble Ok, well let me ask you this. Why is him being a slave a bad origin story? How does it detract from his character?
English

@avidfilm Your lack of appreciation for the Bond characters does not change the fact that Maul is underwritten for the role that he is supposed to carry in the story. Having him be a disposable Darth makes the entire Sith subplot less interesting than it should be.
English

@AceRumble I’ve seen Goldfinger a few times. I still just see a big scary guy with a nice suit and a deadly bowler hat. He wasn’t exactly Jean Valjean.
English

@avidfilm Does it? Anakin is never once shown to have had any trauma from being a slave carried over later in PM or in any other film. There was absolutely no payoff for this origin at any point.
English

@AceRumble It certainly adds to his psychological trauma. It provides an obstacle for him in becoming a Jedi in the first place that he needs to overcome. And a good reason why he wasn’t discovered by the Jedi as an infant.
English

@avidfilm Maybe you should try rewatching those movies then, or else you could take this opinion over to a Bond thread and see how well those fans respond.
English

@AceRumble Really 😂? I don’t know anything about Oddjob or Jaws except they’re big scary guys that take orders.
English

@avidfilm Just because you don't agree with it doesn't make it a valid criticism.
English

@AceRumble I don’t agree with that. I think it went on as long as it needed to go.
English

@avidfilm Fair enough, if it was critical to the story, please give examples of how Anakin himself being a slave was an important factor in his character development through the later films.
English

@AceRumble Why shouldn’t there be slavery in the stories? Tatooine is not a nice place. And one of the points of the story is how the Jedi became too cold and bureaucratic, which is partially what led to their downfall.
English

@avidfilm Everything the race provided to the plot and to the entertainment of the audience could have been done in half the screen time. It ran for too long and became boring as a result. That is a pacing and editing issue.
English

@AceRumble Again, the race was necessary for them to obtain the parts and buy Anakin’s freedom. I don’t know how that’s unnecessary
English

@avidfilm I'm saying that the script could have been written in a way that Anakin goes to training without it looking like the Jedi are either accepting of slavery or too weak to challenge its establishment. Why even have slavery be a part of the story in the first place?
English

@AceRumble Why would the Jedi do that? They completely reject emotional attachment and Tatooine is outside their jurisdiction. Do you suggest they should have started a war with Tatooine to end slavery?
English

@avidfilm The Bond henchmen you mentioned had their personalities very successfully communicated and understood by the audience from their acting and from clever writing. Maul was given nothing more than a black hood and a cool looking lightsaber.
English

@AceRumble Darth Maul was a henchman. A Bond henchman, like Oddjob or Jaws. Do you feel that Oddjob or Jaws should have been given more character development?
English

@avidfilm Disagree, Ben Hur successfully demonstrated legitimate stakes and drama to its race. Everything valuable to the story that the pod race provided could have been given in a third of the run time.
English

@AceRumble Do you feel the same way about the chariot race in Ben Hur. The podrace provided an excellent example of Anakin’s force capabilities, and was how he managed to gain his freedom and provide Qui Gon with the parts he needed.
English

@avidfilm The Jedi taking Anakin with them while leaving his mother in slavery was at best a questionable and distracting scripting choice.
English

@avidfilm For what should have been a pivotal role, Darth Maul was given exactly zero character development except looking cool and aura farming.
