@l_u_n_a13 @KAnthonyAppiah I was making the ironic point that those who use history to make political arguments don't really seem to care about history. Because it's not really reasonable to say "Due to historical event X, we should do Y." So historical evidence usually ends up being mere fodder.

Fascinating debate. Key question is: what role should empirical historical evidence play in ethical arguments? I agree with @KAnthonyAppiah that history shouldn’t constrain political theses. Ironically, those who DO find such evidence useful seem to treat it with very little care
