This photograph seems particularly relevant today. I took it in Afghanistan on May 23rd 1980, when the West was supporting the Mujahideen. So much suffering, death and destruction over so many years. So sad.

It's OK to break the rules as long as you have the money to buy your way out of it with "significant contributions".

Here an image for World Day for Animals in Laboratories. I was a SEALL photographer when I photographed this Old English Sheepdog in the research facility of the Royal College of Surgeons in Kent on August 26th 1984. Pictures such as this have haunted me for decades.

Many moons ago Sue and I spent the first week of our honeymoon in a beautiful Landmark Trust property on the Sandringham Estate. Whilst there we encountered this celebration of Royal dominance over the animal kingdom.

Primate in a Portuguese Prison. We get but one go at life on this earth. To spend the entirety of it in misery and suffering for the greed and callousness of man is a crime the full measure of which will one day be recognised.

I photographed this bear at Chester zoo on August 14th 1971. He waited for his lock down to end. And waited and waited. He died waiting. Evolution made a fatal error giving us dominance over our fellow species.

I took this photo at Southam Zoo on June 7th 1984. This Warwickshire zoo opened in 1966 and closed in 1985. In 1980 the zoo made the news with a chimpanzee they named Muhammad Ali and encouraged to chain smoke. He was photographed with a cigar. (Google: Southam chimpanzee smoke).

Some Animal Rights history. My photo shows protest placards outside Bicester Magistrates Court on Wednesday November 27th 1974. We were there for the committal proceedings of three Band of Mercy activists. For further details see The Animals’ Freedom Fighter or Outfoxed Take Two.

My photograph of giant panda Chi-Chi in London Zoo in 1965. Seeing her as an exhibit, alone, sad and frustrated made me think about our relationship with animals. In May 1955 Chi-Chi was just a few months old when caught in the wild and jailed for life. She died July 22nd 1972.
