ActionAid Association engaged with students at Amity Law School for a session led by Mr. Sandeep Chachra, Executive Director, on reimagining career pathways in law beyond the courtroom and towards public policy, community practice, and social justice. The session challenged dominant imaginations of the legal profession, situating law not merely as an instrument of litigation but as a political tool to democratise access to justice. Drawing from constitutional values of justice, equality, and fraternity, the discussion foregrounded the ethical responsibility of lawyers to work alongside those most oppressed and excluded. Particularly marginalized communities living in conditions of precarity, including workers, denotified tribes, forest dwellers and other marginalised groups. Building on the evolution of legal frameworks such as the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, and the transformative potential of Public Interest Litigation in expanding access to justice, Mr. Chachra emphasised how legal interventions must move beyond courts into communities. From legal awareness and public education to sustained engagement with grassroots movements, the role of the lawyer becomes one of a social actor embedded within struggles for rights and dignity. The session highlighted how gaps between law and practice persist across contexts—whether in the implementation of the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act or in addressing emerging challenges such as climate-induced loss and damage, and the precarity of urban and informal workers. In this context, legal work must also mean amplifying voices, strengthening collective organising, and pushing for legislative and policy reforms that respond to lived realities. Through examples from ActionAid Association’s work—including campaigns against witch-branding, efforts to address bonded labour, support for homeless persons, and development of POSH resources—the discussion illustrated how legal practitioners can engage in long-term, people-aligned work. This includes providing pro bono legal services, collaborating with unions, collectives, and local governance institutions, and contributing to community legal services through clinics and sustained outreach. The conversation ultimately located the lawyer not as an individual expert, but as part of a broader ecosystem of resistance and change—working with communities to expose structural injustices, strengthen accountability, and advance transformative social justice. @sndeep @amitylawschool

Cities today reflect deep inequality and climate stress—especially for informal workers. We must move beyond exclusionary, profit-driven urban models toward “We the People” cities that ensure housing, dignity, safety, and inclusion. Real transformation lies in reclaiming urban commons, strengthening social consensus, and building cities that work for the most vulnerable—not just the privileged.@sndeep
