While the Mises Institute will probably continue to benefit for quite some time from the prestige built up over decades, Hans-Hermann Hoppe's latest testimony further highlights the Institute's moral and intellectual decline. My piece in @rothbard_brasil. rothbardbrasil.com/the-mises-inst…

@PhilWMagness @NSKinsella thoughtfully reached out to bridge the gap in perspectives regarding Hoppe, you have not reconsidered your position. What seems to be the hurdle? This lack of flexibility is unexpected from a scholar of your caliber.

Most of the people who claim Hoppe is a "great economist" don't actually care about his economic contributions (of which there aren't any of note). They are drawn to him because he tries to justify racial segregation through an incoherent Habermasian theory of property rights.

I am currently writing my master's thesis in the philosophy of science, specifically focusing on methodological individualism within the philosophy of the social sciences. I am reaching out to you because you were supervised by Alex Rosenberg and appear to be one of the few experts in this field with profound expertise on this subject. My objective is to defend the methodological individualism of Weber, Hayek, and Popper. Prior to this defense, I intend to critique methodological holism, which is currently the most widely accepted position. Methodological holists advocate for the explanatory autonomy of the upper level based on the multiple realizability argument, and they often dismiss methodological individualists, including Hayek, as proponents of mere reductionism. As Hayekian philosophers of science such as Di Iorio and Bulle have effectively exposed the misunderstandings of these texts and the ignorance of their historical context, I will not address those issues directly. Rather, as you have pointed out, genuine methodological individualists do not deny the supervenience relationship highlighted by the multiple realizability argument. What I am interested in, regardless of whether methodological individualism can accommodate the multiple realizability argument, is whether introducing this argument is actually useful for understanding the micro-macro relationship in the social sciences. I am aware that there are several prior studies addressing this point (Greve 2010; Mitrovic 2016; Ramstrom 2018; Ylikoski 2024). I have doubts about whether the fact that social phenomena are multiply realized can truly serve as a favorable tool for holists, and I would like to ask for your perspective on this matter.

Exactly. The influence of pro-Japanese collaborators persisted through the Rhee and Park eras (Park was even a Manchukuo officer) and continues in today's mainstram conservative leadership. Crucially, they’ve adapted by repackaging their original "anti-communist statism" as "free market liberalism" to stay relevant in a globalized, democratic era(This is clearly the negative legacy of Reagan and Thatcher, and unfortunately, it’s the same role that Milei is playing today.). Their defense of the Japanese colonial period is grounded in a neoclassical economic approach—though, as far as I know, most mainstream economists remain largely skeptical of this. A representative example is the book '反日種族主義' (Anti-Japan Tribalism), which has also been translated and published in Japanese. Professor Yoong-Deok Jeon, the Academic Dean of Mises Korea and the only Rothbardian economist in Korea, published a study refuting the favorable assessment of the colonial era from a Mises-Rothbardian Austrian perspective. Surprisingly, his analysis was rejected by many self-proclaimed libertarians—even those who usually loved the Austrian Eonomics for its stances on limited government and low taxes. A Book review of Professor Jeon’s Rothbardian analysis was once introduced in Japanese by the Japanese branch of Hankyoreh(japan.hani.co.kr/arti/culture/5…). It garnered over 300 malicious comments on Yahoo Japan. For some reason, that article has since been deleted and can no longer be found on Yahoo.

That's interesting. It reminds me of the self-proclaimed Japanese liberals (right-wingers) who justify Imperial Japan's rule over the Korean Peninsula by claiming it "did good things" as well. And indeed, there are historical ties between "pro-Japanese" figures in South Korea and Imperial Japan.
Gyeonghoon Kim 🇰🇷@ActionAxiom

@libertypressjp It is the same in Korea. A striking characteristic of self-proclaimed libertarians here is their attempt to provide a libertarian defense of authoritarian and statist eras, such as the Japanese colonial period and the regimes of Rhee Syngman and Park Chung-hee.

@burnthalies @mises I agree, and I actually added that in a follow-up comment (I’m limited to 180 characters because I don't have a paid account). I was specifically raising an issue with the nuance of the last sentence in this post, not dismissing the value of their academic work.

@mises The last sentence downplays the seriousness of the issue. We can't just ignore HdS's support for Milei, especially given how respected HdS is in our field. To me, this is much worse than a libertarian supporting a regular statist from the Republican or Democratic Party.
