I want to thank my Council colleagues, the Department of Transportation, and all of the Orchard residents who have engaged with their local government throughout this process.

This week, Council unanimously adopted my memo to terminate the Charcot overpass project and redirect funding to other projects in the area that will support North San Jose’s development.

“The project creates unacceptable environmental, health, and safety risks for the adjacent school and community,” wrote Cortese, who voted against the environmental impact report that included the Charcot Avenue project when he was a councilmember in 2005. sanjosespotlight.com/san-jose-ends-…

@monicamallon Don't be hard on yourself. A lot of good came from that. New friends and coalitions, new attention and ideas. Sometimes new seeds only can take hold after you've turned and tilled the soil.

And I was given the resources to do bold things by some amazing elected officials even though I was a broke college student at the time. But I couldn't get enough external support to be successful, and everything blew up, and we had to take a different approach.

I didn't include anything about this in my public comments or posts about Charcot because the past is in the past is in the past. But we did try to do a bike and ped alternative and we did generally try to do stuff that was more bold. (Look for clips from 2019/2020).

Last year, traffic deaths dipped in Oakland and San Francisco but San Jose shattered its record with 61 people killed. Now, the alarming trend has only accelerated with eight people killed in San Jose's roads in the first three weeks of 2022 mercurynews.com/2022/01/28/san…

Yes, better reporting is no substitute for systemic and engineering changes to our roads. But better reporting would help make these changes possible. @mercnews and @SJPD_PIO please do better.

The report could also note that (at least in 2020) the City attempted an "education campaign" at this exact location by putting up some banners.

Today's report in the Mercury News (mercurynews.com/2022/01/25/aut…) about yet another traffic fatality left me saddened for the loss of another human life but also outraged about the way it was reported. @SJPD_PIO and @mercnews need to do better! ( 🧵Thread)
