Transformation is more than a numbers game; it’s about understanding the "why" behind success. In our latest podcast episode, Nalen Naidoo and Michelle Abrahams discuss a strategic pivot for the Actuarial Society: moving away from only identifying hurdles and towards scaling Success Accelerators. By researching the support systems, mentorship, and networks that help our students thrive, we can replicate those "fillers" for everyone. Our goal? A profession that truly mirrors the demographics of South Africa🇿🇦 Key Takeaway: We aren't just looking at the barriers; we are building the bridges. The Road Accident Fund, with a deficit believed to run into the hundreds of billions of Rands, is facing a backlog of claims for accidents that occurred more than 20 years ago. @ActuarialSa commissioned research into a more viable compensation system for future victims of road accidents. The findings by @expertactuary, George Schwalb and David Rodda are presented in a recently published research paper titled "Towards a reasonable, affordable, equitable, and sustainable road accident compensation system”. tinyurl.com/25ysjlnz

This International Mathematics Day, ASSA is proud to celebrate the remarkable growth of the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO) and Challenge (SAMC). With over 186,000 learners participating this year, we see more than just numbers; we see the next generation of analytical thinkers. Read the official statement from the South African Maths Foundation (SAMF) here: assa.net.za/io/cw As a long-standing partner of the SAMF, ASSA celebrates this growth because these competitions are the primary pipeline for the actuarial profession. By identifying and nurturing mathematical talent at the school level, we are securing the future of our industry and ensuring South Africa continues to produce world-class actuaries. 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘃𝗶𝗮 𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗧 The path from a high school Olympiad to a qualified actuary is a demanding one. The Actuarial Society Education Trust (ASET) exists to bridge the gap, providing essential financial support to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the talent but lack the means to pursue actuarial science. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲: Your donation to ASET directly transforms lives by funding the education of future professionals. You can find the official ASSA banking details for an EFT donation by visiting our website here: assa.net.za/io/cv Together, we can turn mathematical potential into professional excellence. #InternationalMathsDay #SAMF #ASSA #ActuarialScience #ASET #STEMSouthAfrica #MathsOlympiad #FutureActuaries

Gig workers often play a risky game of chance when it comes to insuring vehicles and equipment. John Wessels, actuary and member of the @ActuarialSA Short-term Insurance Committee, says gig workers rely heavily on personal vehicles and electronic devices, yet most insure for personal use only. Understanding the three categories of short-term insurance (personal, business and commercial) is key to signing up for the most appropriate short-term insurance cover. tinyurl.com/4a3w7k2c

If you work in healthcare, education, or infrastructure, you’ve likely heard of the Equitable Share Formula. It is one of the most powerful tools in the South African Constitution for ensuring fairness and equity, but its technical structure is often a "black box" to those outside of the National Treasury. We are excited to invite actuarial professionals, economists, and policy analysts to a Public Interest Masterclass focused on demystifying this critical mechanism. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱? As professionals driven by data and risk, we are uniquely positioned to contribute to the evolution of these formulae. Whether it's through demographic modelling, cost estimation, or risk assessment, our skills are vital to ensuring the formula meets the emerging challenges of our society. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲:   • The Technical Build: How the Education and Health allocations are actually calculated.   • The Data Drivers: Why population dynamics and need indicators are the heartbeat of equitable funding.   • The Actuarial Edge: Identifying where rigorous modelling can refine public policy. 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘆: We are honoured to be joined by a powerhouse panel of former senior government leaders who have lived and breathed these policies:   • Mr. Andrew Donaldson (Former National Treasury DDG)   • Mr. Satish Roopa (Former MEC and Executive Mayor)   • Dr. Charles Nwaila (Former COGTA DG) Join the conversation and equip yourself with the insights needed to engage meaningfully with policymakers and contribute to the broader public interest. South Africa’s retirement landscape is at a crossroads. As Defined Contribution (DC) funds become the standard, the burden of risk has shifted heavily onto the individual. The question is: Are we doing enough to support them? It’s time for the actuarial profession to evolve. We are moving beyond the "checker" role to become the architects of retirement outcomes. Join us for a critical discussion on how actuaries can drive value in a DC-dominated world by: - Shaping Investment Strategy to prioritise long-term adequacy. - Strengthening Governance and managing individual risk. - Implementing APN 209: Get a high-level overview of the new Advisory Practice Note (currently out for comment) and its impact on your advisory role. This isn't just a sessional; it’s a roadmap for the future of our profession and the financial security of millions of South Africans. This sessional will be presented by Costa Economou (Colourfield) and Michael de Villiers (Liberty Life: Corporate Benefits and RMC). 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 - 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆. In the latest episode of the ASSA Clarity podcast, we "rip off the Band-Aid" on transformation within the South African actuarial profession. While African representation among fellows has grown to 10% (and 27% for AIC groups) over the last two decades, the journey is far from over. Host Lucienne sits down with Nalen Naidoo (President of ASSA) and Michelle Abrahams (Member Engagement Executive) to discuss a pivotal shift in strategy: 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀." 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲: -𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗿" 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁: How a simple intervention at a Maths Olympiad can spark a career. -𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝗽: Why a student base that is 60% Black, Indian, Coloured still faces hurdles reaching Fellowship. -𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵: Why ASSA is partnering with the HSRC to hear the real stories behind the data.
