I sometimes feel like my current writing feels less like me than my old writing did. I was taught decades ago to use the techniques that now mark prose as AI: medial modifiers, em-dashes, building to contrast, etc. I take those out in revisions so people don't think I'm just AI!

@mellissameisels Congratulations and go Blue! Ann Arbor is absolutely lovely - depending on when you move, Top of the Park will still be going on, and possibly the art fair.

Some personal & professional news: I'm moving to the University of Michigan, where I'll be an Assistant Professor of Political Science as of tomorrow. I'll always be grateful to have begun my career at Yale & will miss my colleagues dearly, but very excited for this next chapter!

“Federal judges ruled in two separate cases last year that the Trump administration had broken the law by halting research grants as a way to impose policy changes.” And this is why it’s important to speak out rather than hide and hope. nytimes.com/2026/05/29/us/… via @NYTimes

@maya_sen MIT has built a lot of grad housing over the last decade. part Of the impetus was that the Cambridge city government blamed rising costs on grad students accessing the local market. Turns out that it’s been difficult to fill grad dorms because of grad student preferences

You can either pay grad students more to afford to live here or you can be part of a long-term solution in terms of bringing down cost of living

My hottest take on this is that, yes, Cambridge MA is extremely HCOL for young people, and that’s partly Harvard’s fault because it has always relied on off-campus housing for huge numbers of grad students MIT, too
Ashvin Gandhi@ashdgandhi

I'm a former Harvard PhD student. Based on my experience, current social science students probably make a bit over $250k + healthcare over 5 years, with just 784 hours of required TA work. That's almost $320/hour for the "work" and the rest is classes and your own research.
