Aorta comes from the Greek word ‘aeiro’ which means ‘to lift, raise, be hung up’, from the ancient notion that the heart is suspended from the aorta. It shares etymology with ‘aorter’, the name of the shoulder strap used by Greek hoplites to hang their swords.
