Most Kenyans think Nairobi means “place of cold winds.” It doesn’t.
In the Maa language, Nairobi comes from “Enkare Nyirobi,” meaning “place of cool waters,” a direct reference to the Nairobi River. It’s about the water, not the air.
Kijabe is the one about wind. From the Maa word “en-kijáp,” meaning wind, describing the cold gusts that sweep across the eastern edge of the Great Rift Valley.
Both names carry coldness. But the Maasai were precise. One described a river. The other described the sky.
