During the late medieval era around 1500, Ainaba (Aynaba in Sool), Xiis (Heis in Sanaag), and Karin (in Sahil) were inhabited by Somali pastoralist and trading communities. These areas fell within the sphere of the Adal Sultanate (centered on Zeila), with coastal ports like Xiis and Karin serving as key hubs for livestock, frankincense, and trade routes to Aden and beyond. Inland Ainaba featured early Islamic settlements tied to regional networks. Primarily ancestors of Isaaq (esp. Habr Je'lo subclans along the coast) and Darod (Dhulbahante inland) clans lived there as nomads, traders, and settlers.
