So what exactly is this Scottish Green candidate proposing as a punishment for murderers? Arts and crafts lessons?

Ludicrous that the #2 and #3 Green candidates on my regional list advocate for a policy of rapists and murderers walking the streets rather being locked up behind bars. Scotland needs a progressive justice system, detention must always play a role for the most serious offences.

🟢 Green candidates in revolt after refusing to renounce call to abolish jails. Party HQ had claimed Kate Nevens supported prisons as “last resort”. But she says she wants “complete abolition”. Opponents say Greer and Mackay have lost control of bonkers candidates. Link⬇️

Day 1 as Energy Minister Grangemouth was the first thing in my in-tray. The Tories had done absolutely nothing despite knowing the issues. No plan. Not even a call to the Scottish Government. In 13 years not a single meeting with all of the UK's refineries. A shameful record.
Claire Coutinho@ClaireCoutinho

Last year Britain lost a THIRD of its refineries. Why? A Carbon Tax on industry that Ed Miliband doubled. We won’t need any less petrol, diesel, jet fuel, ceramics or chemicals - we'll just rely more on foreign imports. We must axe the Carbon Tax and save British industry.

The refinery closure was announced in November 2023, 13 years into a Tory Government. The Tory Gov called this a "commercial decision" at the time and didn't lift a finger. In December a tory shadow minister, she dismissed the case for Grangemouth as "whataboutery".

I’m currently listening to Nicola Sturgeon’s autobiography. She explains how John Swinney cut funding for home insulation to spite the Green MSPs in his 2009 budget. John Swinney has a history of caring more about politics than actual delivery.
John Swinney@JohnSwinney

On day one of a new SNP government, I will demand powers over energy to be transferred to the Scottish Parliament - so we can cut bills, protect jobs and unlock investment. If Westminster will not bring your bills down, they should get out of the way for a government that will.

Bills fall this week - thanks to Labour. Still waiting on John Swinney’s energy strategy (3 years in draft), his plan to cut fuel poverty (he cut the funding), or his explanation of how independence lowers bills (it won’t). After two decades the SNP has nowhere to hide on this.

I'm pleased that the UK Government has taken a strategically sound decision to protect Europe's wind turbine manufacturing base from Chinese dumping. Meanwhile, the Scottish Government subsidises Chinese firms to dump even more electric buses, undermining our manufacturing base.
John Swinney@JohnSwinney

Deeply disappointed that the UK Labour government has blocked Ming Yang’s investment in our renewables industry - putting up to 1500 Scottish jobs at risk. At the very moment we should be building clean energy, they are sabotaging Scotland’s industrial future.

Responsible governments take decisions which always put national security and resilience first. That is what the UK Government has done. Playing politics with national security is deeply irresponsible.

Exclusive: Labour covered the cost of a specialist tax lawyer hired to look into Angela Rayner’s finances in the lead-up to her resignation as deputy prime minister last year. A leading barrister was asked to examine whether she underpaid stamp duty. Jonathan Peacock KC spent up to five days examining Rayner’s finances, providing a draft and final legal advice about the purchase of a £700,000 flat in Hove. The Times has now learned that the expense was paid for by party headquarters. The costs of Peacock’s services are not known. However, Dan Neidle, a tax expert, said the bill could easily have run to tens of thousands of pounds. He said advice on a straightforward tax issue would cost about £4,000, “about as cheap a consultation with a leading tax KC as one can imagine”. Neidle added: “If there was something more complex going on, then it could be a lot more. A whole morning’s consultation with complex papers could be £20,000. Sometimes more.” At the time, Laurie Magnus wrote in a letter to the PM the advice covered "her personal position in relation to council tax, stamp duty land tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax". The spending was criticised by senior Labour sources. One said: “I’m amazed party money was spent trying to protect Angela, given her hefty salary. We need to understand why the party thought it a good idea to spend membership fees and trade union donations on expensive lawyers, when this had nothing to do with Angela’s role as deputy leader.” Another said: “This is a really shameful use of resources when we have crucial elections to fight, and party funds being used for an individual’s tax advice will not endear her to members.” Rayner’s allies said the decision to hire Peacock was not taken by her. They said she requested legal advice from the party and senior officials proposed using Peacock’s services. The advice was therefore commissioned by Labour, rather than Rayner herself. Labour declined to comment.

So now Trump asks Britain to send warships to fight in the Strait of Hormuz. Just a few days after stating that he didn't need our help. Oh, and all this for a war which he claims is "already won". The man is deranged.

Holyrood needs modernisation. Its rigid procedural approach prevents it being topical and relevant. It has now resulted in a severe legislative log jam. All the chamber time given to empty motions that occupy the time table normally, now look very foolish.
Conor Matchett@conor_matchett

As I understand it there are EIGHT - EIGHT - Stage 3 debates/votes slated for next week Holyrood isn't functioning properly! Stop pretending this is normal! We've had FIVE YEARS and we're passing EIGHT BILLS within a week! That's before you look at ditched member's bills...
