They're not interested in the fact that Israel provided arms to both sides, and that France armed "Biafra" not to win, but to make the war drag on and cause maximum suffering to Nigeria as retaliation for Nigeria's public opposition to French nuclear bomb testing in Algeria. All this important context is unimportant. All they know is "This black man that looks just like me and lives down the road from me is my biggest enemy in the world." Same phenomenon in DR Congo where many Congolese nationalists will tell you that Paul Kagame is Satan himself and Rwanda is the source of all their security problems - but they will never acknowledge that Rwanda by itself can never destabilise a country nearly 100 times bigger without the active and ongoing involvement of a powerful foreign backer. The Nigerian military? I have so many stories of my encounters with them as a journalist, and all I have to say is that today's Nigerian military is not the same as the one from the 90s. It's now full of people with low self-esteem whose superiors literally call them "breakable plates" (disposable) to their faces, and what they can do about it is go tell a journalist so that he will "make it go viral." Their superiors steal their allowances and watch them physically starve, and their response is to anonymously beg a journalist to "make it viral." People holding AK-47s. Nigeria is the first place in the world where I've met a soldier (with no family and nothing left to lose) who wanted to whistleblow about something terrible that was done to them, but changed their mind because they were afraid to die. A soldier who was afraid that powerful (civilian) people would kill them even though a) They're a soldier who had literally killed people and faced death already, and b) They literally had nothing to lose and nothing to live for🤷🏿 Nigeria will build a land bridge to Brazil before the current Nigerian military will grow a spine. Zero hope from that direction.
