Big Announcement Four months ago, I set out to document my thoughts and experiences on Artist Development into a result oriented guide for artists, executives and professionals in the music business. Today, I’m excited to announce that the book ARTIST DEVELOPMENT: MOVING FROM GOOD TO VALUABLE is officially out! This 370-page book is a structured compendium of relevant content that can help artists grow and become productivity; guided by creativity, timeless principles, and proven management concepts. But beyond the book, this is also the beginning of a bigger vision: the journey towards the establishment of the Imerge Creative Hub (ICH), Lagos. The ICH will be a community based environment and marketplace where emerging creatives in the music business can create affordably, collaborate and achieve their goals seamlessly. Proceeds from this book will go towards making that dream a reality. I’m calling on the creative community and every stakeholder in the music business to support this vision with goodwill and solidarity by way of purchase of this book. To God be the Glory. 👉 Get the eBook (₦10,000): selar.com/artistdevelopm… 👉 Order the Hard Copy (₦15,800): tinyurl.com/artistdevelopm…

Magnito says it as it is. Creativity and talent that has no point of application to its market, has no value.

Without a heightened level of emotional intelligence, it will be difficult for an Artiste to build and effectively work with a team. If you are the type of Artiste who always needs to be the smartest person in the room, or you struggle to trust others with major decisions, you will eventually exhaust yourself. You’ll find yourself constantly trying to stay in the driver’s seat while still doing 100% of the work ,  even when you’re paying people to work for you. A functional team only works when the Artiste is secure enough to delegate authority, trust competence, and allow others contribute their expertise. Otherwise, the team becomes cosmetic rather than operational.

One of @yemialadee ‘s finest songs. I remember when I first heard it about 6years ago. It was on repeat. Still one of my favorite songs from a Nigerian Artist.

As an Artiste, even though you have a manager or a team, you must know how to manage yourself, your team and your business. You must learn how to give instructions. You must learn how to understand and respond to your team as the chief driver of your career. Unless you are signed, being an Artiste is like running a full business.

It takes a lot of emotional stamina to thrive in this era of music. You’ve to “endure” rejection, disappointment and sometimes treachery. Recognizing that these are things that are constant in the music business, is enough reason why a creative who desires to succeed must learn to move with strategy anchored on principles, and a determination to have a strong mental frame. Manage your expectations, don’t over trust blindly, and take rejection as a normal. Also, focus on being valuable, so you don’t have to beg and depend on people too much, because it is the nature of people to put their interests first.

Ensuring that a new Artiste succeeds depends on many factors (some controllable, others not). But among the factors that can be controlled, the most critical is the degree of resonance between the music and the market it is intended to serve. A label’s leverage, marketing budget, and branding strategy all matter. However, when it comes to achieving the most reliable outcomes and the strongest ROI, they are secondary variables. At the foundation of everything is the sound and the perceived value the market assigns to that sound. If the music does not resonate deeply with the intended market, no amount of marketing sophistication or industry leverage can sustainably compensate for that gap. In the long run, primary market resonance is the most reliable driver of success.

So many emerging Artists are sleeping on the power of strategic collaboration. Penetrating the music market becomes easier when an Artiste positions themselves to be valuable to other Artistes who want access to a segment of the market they already control. Collaboration is rarely just about talent. It is often about market access. To become attractive for collaborations, an Artiste must dominate a segment of the market (no matter how small). If you have strong influence in a local government, city, campus, community, or even a niche online audience, any Artiste trying to reach that market will naturally see collaboration with you as the easiest entry point. You become the bridge to that audience. So as an emerging Artist, the question is: What segment of the market are you deliberately building dominance in? Because no matter how talented you are, other Artistes will rarely see value in collaborating with you if your talent hasn’t captured a meaningful audience they want access to. Beyond market access, your collaboration value must also come from distinctiveness. Your sound, production choices, and delivery style must be recognizable enough that your presence on a song adds something unique. Your collaboration value should therefore be three dimensional: •The audience or market you control •Your distinct sound and production identity •The impact of your presence on a record If other Artistes aren’t reaching out to collaborate with you, you likely lack one or more of these. And if you are not deliberately reaching out to collaborate with Artistes whose audience aligns with your growth strategy, then you are not being strategic. You are simply hoping for growth in a highly competitive and interconnected music ecosystem.
