This is why I get so annoyed at the dumb conservatives who denigrate “sports ball” or whatever. Sports are a fundamental part of culture, just like art. You can’t pretend that you want to preserve American culture while at the same time totally dismissing these elements of culture. You don’t have to be a fan of any particular sport, but to write off the whole thing as beneath you just makes you a pretentious dork at best, or a nihilist at worst. Or both.

Not trying to play the psychologist here, but this is a perfect study in dominance display. 1) Trump does not really look at Mamdani to signal indifference. (2) Trump remains seated while Mamdani stands, creating an automatic hierarchy. (3) Trump initiates the physical touch, which marks who sets the terms of the interaction. Trump is really good at this stuff.

Instead of blaming American homelessness on the Jewish State by falsely claiming the US funds “genocide,” Mamdani could simply advocate for more funding to end homelessness. But he is a populist who knows that scapegoating Israel will gain him more support — and doesn’t care that it reinforces antisemitic tropes.
