After a lengthy week filled with challenging academic activities and a major in-course assessment, I decided to retreat to my home. This choice was prompted by an assignment I needed to complete, which required my return home. In addition, my mom suggested it would be beneficial for me to declutter over the weekend in preparation for the hectic week ahead.
Consequently, I headed to the train terminal in Ikeja with the intention of boarding a train to Iju station, from where I would proceed to my destination.
I was initially disappointed to discover that the ticketing booth was out of travel cards, which I intended to purchase. I hadn't anticipated needing to travel by train until about two hours earlier. Every fiber of my being wanted to vent my frustration on the officials in charge, but I realized it was getting dark and I needed to get to my destination before it was too late. The unsafe nature of the road at night was another factor that weighed on my mind, so I decided to proceed anyway.
Then, I had an outrageous encounter. As I made my way to the exit that linked to the pedestrian bridge outside, a man wearing a T-shirt that bore the insignia of the military police (Mopol) asked where I was headed. Due to the late hour, my frustration over the travel complications caused by the incompetence of the station workers, and the exasperation of being asked an obvious question, I simply gestured toward the exit while hurriedly approaching it.
Surprisingly, the man responded rather aggressively, stating that I was not allowed to use the 'exit' because he had been instructed by his superior to prevent anyone from leaving that way. He added that I would have to descend two stories to use the main entrance as my exit, which would have delayed me by an additional five minutes before reaching the main road where I could board a commercial bus. I found this unreasonable and pointed out that the passage was clearly marked as an 'exit' with a neon sign.
As I was about to leave the terminal, the man suddenly shoved me aside violently. Before I could react, he secured the exit with a chain and padlock while hurling derogatory words at me. Out of annoyance, I sternly warned him to avoid any further physical contact, as I would not hesitate to defend myself.
In the midst of our argument, another passenger arrived at the exit, pleading to be let in because he was already late for the train scheduled to depart around 7:10 PM. However, the security worker denied him access, telling him to "go and board a bus," simply because he feared I would use the exit if he allowed the other man in. This situation was both disgusting and unacceptable; I pulled out my device to record the incident for evidence and fought my way through the exit, letting the other passenger into the terminal.
Seeing his plan thwarted, the security man, whom I clearly identified, told me he had "marked" my face for future recognition and would subject me to harm if he saw me again.
This incident is just a glimpse into the unacceptable level of incompetence at the Ikeja train terminal.
A classmate who takes the train every weekday often complains to me about the attitude of the workers, the poor operational services, and the apathy of the officials toward the welfare of passengers, among other subpar practices.
This situation is unfortunate, and I felt it was necessary to bring it to the attention of @LamataOnline to look into the matter.
As I await a resolution to these issues, please note that I intend to return to the train station on Monday for further inquiries and a possible explanation for the inhumane treatment passengers have to endure there.
