He was a struggling man. Not lazy. Not useless. Just unlucky with life. Every morning, he woke up with hope in his chest and pressure on his neck. He worked, hustled, pushed himself, but nothing ever seemed enough. The kind of life where your pocket embarrasses you before people even get the chance to. Then he met her. She wasn’t the loud type. She wasn’t perfect either. But she carried peace around him like it was her duty. She became the soft place life never gave him. When he had nothing, she stayed. When transport was hard, she sent money. When he was mentally tired, she spoke life into him. When he felt less of a man, she reminded him that better days would come. Sometimes she bought him things without him asking. Sometimes she would sit beside him and talk about the future like she could already see it clearly. A future he himself was afraid to imagine. Of course, she was human too. There were days pain spoke through her mouth. Days she would ask quietly, “What have you done for me?” or “How long are we going to keep living like this?” Not because she hated him. Not because she regretted him. But because even strong women get tired sometimes. Still, she loved him deeply. She turned down better options for him. Men with stable jobs, clean futures, good cars, family approval. She ignored them all because her heart chose one struggling man who barely had anything except sincerity and effort. And the man loved her too. Even though he once made a mistake that almost destroyed everything between them. A mistake born from confusion, weakness, and the stupidity that sometimes enters a man when life already has him frustrated. But he apologized. Not just with words, but with change. And for years after that, he stayed loyal, committed, and careful with her heart. Yet, every night, one fear kept him awake. What if one day she wakes up and realizes love is not enough? What if one day she gets tired of waiting for his life to finally change? Because outside love, reality is cruel. People talk. Society talks. “Cut your coat according to your size.” “A woman cannot keep suffering with a man forever.” “Love does not pay bills.” Those words lived in his head like demons. He would look at her sometimes and smile, but deep down he was scared. Scared that time was moving faster than his progress. Scared that five more years could pass and he would still be promising her “soon.” A man can survive hunger. A man can survive insults. But the fear of disappointing the woman who truly believed in him? That kind of pain eats differently. And the saddest part was this: She never really asked him for luxury. She only wanted reassurance that one day, all the suffering would make sense. So he kept fighting silently. Not because he wanted to prove the world wrong. But because somewhere in this difficult life, one woman chose him when he had almost nothing. And he was terrified of becoming the reason she regrets it.

When my son turned 5, one of his teeth started shaking. You know that stage where they won’t stop touching it with their tongue every five seconds 😭 But what really surprised me was how obsessed he became with the tooth fairy. Every single day it was: “Mummy, how much do you think the tooth fairy gives?” “What does she do with all the teeth?” “What if she forgets my house?” Meanwhile, I used to just laugh and act like I wasn’t listening too much because honestly… I didn’t even know children still believed in stuff like that this seriously. Then one evening, the tooth finally came out while he was eating. You would have thought this boy won the lottery 😭 He carried that tiny tooth around the whole house showing everybody like it was gold. That night, he carefully wrapped it inside tissue paper and placed it under his pillow before sleeping. Before closing his eyes, he whispered: “I hope the tooth fairy comes.” My husband and I just looked at each other and smiled. So after he slept, we quietly entered his room like two thieves on a mission 😭 My husband used his phone torch while I slowly lifted the pillow, took the tooth and replaced it with some money we had already kept aside earlier. We even argued in whispers about how much the “tooth fairy” should leave 😂 The next morning, the scream that came from his room nearly gave me heart attack. “MUMMYYYYYYY!!! SHE CAME!!!” He ran downstairs barefoot, holding the money so tightly in his tiny hands, completely out of breath from excitement. “The tooth fairy is REAL!” And me? I acted shocked too 😭 “Omg really?? Let me see!” That excitement on his face… I can’t even explain it. It wasn’t really about the money. It was the magic of believing something wonderful happened just for him. That was the first time I truly understood that sometimes parenting is about creating little moments your children will carry forever. My son is 8 now. Till today, he still talks about the night the tooth fairy visited him. And every single time he mentions it, I just smile quietly because he still has no idea… Mummy was the tooth fairy all along 🥹
