VIDEO | Srinagar: J&K Bank MD and CEO Amitava Chatterjee on the economic impact of the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir: “We have already conducted an assessment, as a matter of prudence. In terms of direct impact, our total exposure related to not just hotels but the overall tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir is only 1 per cent of our total portfolio. So even if there is any impact, it would be nominal. Why do I say ‘even if there is’? Because we have faced similar situations in the past, and the impact wasn’t significant." He added, "Back when tourism wasn’t a strong economic driver in the region, the highest level of financial stress we faced was about 14 per cent. Even then, within two to three years, it dropped to 2–3 per cent. This reflects the resilience of the sector. So, I don’t believe there will be any substantial direct impact. Even if there is, for the bank, it will be minimal. However, in terms of indirect impact, we’ll need to wait and assess how the overall economy of Jammu and Kashmir is affected."
