Loon chicks are hatching! Remember to give these little bebes some distance as you enjoy the lake. Loon chicks are still working on their diving abilities, so take special care with any motorized vessels.

Whew, long week? We are certainly ready for the weekend, and we hope you get the chance to sleep in & relax like this loon! Loons take short naps on the water; they turn their head and rest it on their back. They can also rest while incubating!

Humans aren't the only ones who get annoyed by black flies and bugs! Loons will constantly duck & dive to avoid these pesky biters. Photo credit to our amazing field staffer, Don Andrews.

Uh oh, rough night buddy? This is what we call the "hangover" position. Loons will do this bent-over position with their head down if they feel threatened and stressed. If you see a loon doing this, make sure to give them space or they might knock an egg of their nest!

Our first loon chicks have been spotted on Chaumont Pond! You can see them riding on the adult's back which helps regulate their body temperature and keep them safe from predators. Loon chicks will take advantage of the warmth of the parent for 2-3 weeks after hatching.
