SEPN enables protected, seamless, and reliable transactions at the point of sale, offering an independent and resilient connectivity model for merchants, acquirers, issuers, and schemes. It is a dedicated SCION Isolation Domain (ISD) purpose-built for cashless payments. After over a decade of research on Quality of Service (QoS) among @Anapaya Systems, @ETH Zürich, and @Mysten Labs, the SIBRA and Colibri systems have been designed. 🚨 We discovered a new attack that can destabilize the Internet’s backbone routing protocol. At the 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘅 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 conference in Seattle, Felix Stöger presented the BGP Vortex: a new attack that traps networks in endless routing oscillations with just three standards-compliant BGP UPDATE messages. ⚠️ Why it matters: • A single BGP Vortex can generate thousands of BGP UPDATEs per second. • These updates ripple across the Internet, overloading routers. • The result: severe control-plane delays and potentially data-plane outages. • Current defenses like BGPSEC or RPKI cannot stop it. • 21 of the 30 largest networks are vulnerable today. 🛡️ Mitigation paths: 👎 Use existing BGP stability mechanisms (e.g., MRAI), but suffer slower convergence even without attacks. 👍 Disable the vulnerable BGP extensions, but sacrifice traffic engineering flexibility. 🚀 Adopt future Internet architectures like SCION, which are fundamentally immune to this attack. This work underscores a pressing reality: as internet routing evolves, capabilities added to BGP can inadvertently enable difficult to detect attacks.
