Nobody is questioning the initiative behind DSI. Everyone is questioning the execution.
Timber and Plywood are perfect examples.
Gov banned raw Timber log exports in 1985 > by 1992, Timber exports accounted for 15% of Indonesia's forex earnings > illegal logging exploded everywhere > SVLK (surat verifikasi legalitas kayu) was launched to prevent illegal logging > then these corrupt fuckers started turning SVLK into a business.
Buyers disappeared. Got so bad that the 1998 IMF LoI explicitly required Indonesia to stop this.
And.. Timber is fundamentally different from Minerals. Timber grows extremely well under the right humidity. Indonesia has a massive natural advantage here.
Minerals are different.
Buyers have plenty of substitutes. Indonesia isn't the only country with these Minerals.
