Combine a file letter + a rank number and every single square on the board gets a unique name. Bottom-left corner = a1. Top-right corner = h8. The very center squares? d4, d5, e4, e5 — the most contested real estate in chess 🔥 This system is called Algebraic Notation — the universal language of chess 🌍

The horizontal rows running across the board are called Ranks. There are 8 of them, numbered 1 through 8 — counting from White's side upward. Ranks 1 & 2 are where White sets up 🏠 Ranks 7 & 8 are where Black sets up 🏠 The middle ranks — 3 through 6 — are the battlefield ⚔️

The vertical columns running up and down the board are called Files. There are 8 of them, and each one has a letter: a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h — reading left to right from White's side. So the leftmost column is the a-file, and the rightmost is the h-file 📐

The chessboard has 64 squares arranged in 8 rows and 8 columns. The squares alternate between light and dark colors — and that pattern isn't random, it's functional. One golden rule before you even sit down: light square on the bottom-right corner. ⬜ Say it with us .. light on right!

Why does algebraic notation matter? Because every chess move ever played is recorded using it. 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 — that's the opening of millions of games, written in a way anyone in the world can replay, study, and learn from. Once you know the grid, you can read chess history like a book 📖♟️

Learn Chess with AfriChess | Part 2: The Board 🗂️ Last week we covered what chess is — a 2-player battle of pure thinking where the goal is to trap the opponent's King. Now let's zoom into the battlefield itself. Before any piece moves, you need to know the board ♟️
