Yet another Christian street preacher has been arrested for criticising Islam. Steve Maile — a 66-year-old Christian pastor and singer — was arrested in Watford after criticising Islam and questioning whether it is a religion of peace. Three Hertfordshire police officers arrested Mr Maile on suspicion of racially or religiously aggravated disorderly behaviour. Mr Maile has been a pastor for 45 years and has preached in more than 50 countries. He also has no previous criminal record. Speaking about his arrest, Mr Maile said: ’One moment I was preaching the gospel, the next I was surrounded and in cuffs. I knew immediately this was wrong. ‘Within seconds, they converged on me, boom, the cuffs were on. Pain. Cuffs on for an hour and half. I was so shocked, everyone was frozen with fear. I was not afraid. Is this a film, is this reality? I knew it was illegal with righteous anger.’ Christian street preachers are increasingly being subjected to heavy-handed policing and a misapplication of public order legislation. Parliament voted to abolish blasphemy laws in 2008, yet this Government’s new official definition of “anti-Muslim hostility” has already been used to silence legitimate criticism and debate about Islam.
