Navalar wasn’t a Tamil revivalist but a Saiva revivalist countering Christian missionaries, not alienating Muslims. Eelam Tamil nationalism was secular enough to draw in Christians, leftists and lower castes. Sri Lankan Moors just don’t think in terms of secular ethnicity, that’s all. If anything, it was the growth of salafism more than saiva revivalism which further accelerated the split, making Moors ditch pagan markers like sari for Arabic customs.

The influence is such that even sanghi Brahmins have internalized TN’s performative anti-caste ideology. Even if it’s aimed at another community (in this case Eelam Tamils), it ultimately hurts Brahmins the most who D stocks and bhimtas hold responsible for introducing and legitimizing the caste system. Also where did this new theory come from? The usual take is that LTTE were low caste Christians. Eelam Tamils are the only group at whom people throw the most bipolar accusations. Just days ago I posted a screenshot of a Sri Lankan calling the LTTE a low caste plot, although historically they’ve weaponized the opposite narrative to paradoxically justify massacring the largest number of Dalits in the entire history of South Asia. We unfortunately don’t have the resources to fight all these powerful propagandists and we’re also cursed with insular allies who don’t know the world beyond their village to know Moors aren’t Tamils.

Yes most of Tamils are dark skinned but contrary to Sinhalapes they neither look like Andaman nggrs, nor larp as Aryans. An elderly Sinhalape even flirted with a young African tourist, claiming he felt close to her because they shared the same skin color (pic 4).

Another Indian victim of the Black July pogrom in 1983. The following account of a Brahmin woman was reported by the Kochi-based The Week magazine the next month: Sarayu Subramanian quickened her pace. She had got off the bus near the Colombo General Hospital after calling on a friend and now had to walk nearly two furlongs to reach her house. Dusk was setting in and if she didn’t get home before sundown, even her little brother in the orthodox Brahmin family would be furious. Sarayu shivered at the thought of walking down the narrow lane leading to her house as she turned the kerb. Oh, there is nothing to worry, she tried to console herself. Then she heard the wild howling. About a dozen people were running towards her. She saw they carried hatchets and iron rods, the murderous hate in their gleaming faces and, beyond them, flames leaping from houses at the end of the lane. She tried to run, but the legs were treacherous, they stood rooted to the ground. ‘Kill her, kill that Indian bitch’, someone shrieked. After the first blow on the head, Sarayu did not feel the wrath of the senseless attackers. She did not know she had also received a deep stab wound on the left shoulder and an ugly gash on the back. ‘They left me for dead’, she later told her father, who is a teacher, and all of her family have sought asylum in a refugee camp set up in a government school along with hundreds of others.
