"I'm told Kawhi Leonard views this as an opportunity to retire in Toronto.” — Shams (h/t @ohnohedidnt24)

@Haki987 @william_lou He lowkey hinted there’s a future storyline where Kawhi retires SGA comes back home to fulfil #2 & win more titles for his country that created the sport or just come back home & dominate with Kawhi! Drake is close with both of em!

All of this Kawhi stuff is odd for a number of reasons, but if LAC isn't going to extend him (after not trading him at the deadline), & if the NBA isn't going to intervene, why aren't more near-contenders entering the mix -- even if only for a one-year flyer? He was that good.

The Clippers believed all season that once there was clarity on the Aspiration situation, a contract extension with Kawhi Leonard would be a formality. The expectation was that Kawhi would not only sign an extension but also take a pay cut, with the Clippers promising to use that financial flexibility to build a legitimate contender around him. Over the last two weeks, though, something changed. Kawhi's camp became much more vocal, going from discussing a team-friendly extension to pushing for a larger deal, eventually requesting a max contract. Throughout the process, the Clippers have remained consistent in their stance, telling Kawhi that the new CBA restrictions make it impossible to build a true contender around him without some level of financial sacrifice. As Kawhi's side became firmer in wanting more guaranteed money, it naturally led to speculation about what caused the shift. Over the last few days, there have also been questions about Kawhi's health and whether concerns about his long-term future have made financial security a bigger priority than winning.
