it feels like from the top down, the Devils worked so hard over the last couple of seasons to become this idea of a contender, instead of leaning into + expanding on their actual strengths.

the Devils made so many missteps over the last year -- not addressing the scoring depth, extending Markstrom early, whatever the hell unfolded with the their trade deadline, among other things, that this felt inevitable.
