Pakistan sits on very strategic location where it can be an absolute pain in the ass for Iran, Russian sphere of influence in central asia and ofc India.
It is ruled by parasitic elite military dictatorship which is mostly interested in maintaining its own interests (which are money and power ) and is often propped by Anglo Americans to do their bidding without asking any questions.
In fact without american support, pakistan would have balkanised long ago.
In short, it's an Anglo American outpost in the region to safeguard their interests in Indian subcontinent, always has been since start and was specifically created for this very purpose by British.
Amrika is a world hegemon, it wants to prevent any regional hegemon from arising lest it too becomes a world power.
India is an old civilizational state with huge population and good pockets of top tier elite human capital, it has huge land mass, it already has space program/nukes/supercomputing/industrial capacity which is increasing day by day.
Propping pakistan up to cut india down to its size so that India doesn't become "Japan's Successor in Asiatic Imperialism" (US state dept's exact words in their 1950 report) has always been most fundamental strategic policy of US in the Indian subcontinent.
Just naive to expect that US will ditch it's client state which does it's bidding with tremendous rapidity, for india.

Indian tankers transiting through the Strait of Hormuz did not pay tolls to Iran, Tehran’s ambassador to New Delhi said on Monday, after US President Donald Trump vowed to block passage for vessels making payments to Iran.
“You can ask the Indian government if we have charged anything up to now,” Ambassador Mohammad Fathali told reporters at a briefing at Iran’s embassy.
“In this difficult time, we have good relations. We believe Iran and India share common interests and a common fate,” he added.
