Seeing a lot of takes on how SLS/Artemis should have cameras, live views, etc. simply because cameras are cheap and easy and look at SpaceX!
It might look easy, but SpaceX actually spends quite a bit of time and effort getting those views. It's not as free as it may look.
Additionally, SpaceX gets views through entire starship flights because of Starlink. I don't think it's super reasonable to suggest that SLS should have Starlink on it or trying to stream video through TDRS, especially on such a highly elliptical orbit.
It's a difficult problem, not nearly just slapping some cameras on there and calling it a day.

@TeslaJoy In the Tesla earnings call in Jan 2025 Elon noted that they would upgrade the HW3 computers for those who bought the FSD package, so it seems like that covers at least a few of you early adopters?
The question and answer start at 43:59 in the link

@connorkapoor @pronounced_kyle I haven't played Factorio yet (slightly afraid of the time sink), but Satisfactory is incredible
English

@pronounced_kyle I’m tired of pretending that factorio is the superior game.
Satisfactory 10x better

If you're an early-stage VC investing in hardware, you need to try Factorio
It will dramatically improve your understanding of complex systems

Robbing your competition of sleep and/or focus is the oldest trick in the books. I knew a scientist in a race to publish that would suggest The Wire to his competitors.

@torybruno I’m having a hard time with scale, can we get a banana for reference?

@CalebChamberla6 Oh man, this brings back some insane nostalgia. Either this or Fury 3 were the first joystick flying games I ever played as a kid, good memories

@_baldtires That's pretty fun. Those were supercharged right? Kinda reminds me of the SRT-4 neon popcorn machines around the same time haha
English

@_baldtires That makes sense, the bead helps simulate higher blank holding pressure by adding that little kink in the perimeter? Are you going to draw bead the whole perimeter, or just the problem areas?
English

@AgitatedPancake yeah i think that would help for sure, but i think generally adding draw beads is gonna be the better solution in the long term
English

@JulianFried Uh, wow! I haven't seen that combo before, and the clean full penetration is insane

@__el__toro__ So good! Isle of Man TT is one of the most pure, raw displays of motorsport that exist, just so good. And to watch the man himself, hell yeah.

I implore you,
watch this from 3:40 onwards.
John McGuinness is riding his motorcycle as fast as he possibly can, on roads never designed for speeds like this.
One false move, he's dead.
There is no margin for error.
There is no coming back.
The line between life & death, on display clear as crystal.
No protective gear is going to save you at these speeds.
No time to think about how terrifying it is when you're in the moment, flat out.
If you're asking why, you will never understand.
100% or nothing at all.

@mattdykema Those are 2005+ Ford Super Duty front wheel hubs being redrilled from 8x170mm bolt pattern to 8x6.5" bolt pattern. Funny to randomly stumble across projects I recognize 😆

I genuinely don't know my way around the numbers, but it seems like Elon has insinuated that - Growing domestic energy output at a rate anywhere close to projected datacenter needs is nearly impossible with public and regulatory pushback. Especially when looking at those historical charts comparing the US energy growth to China in the last decade, it just doesn't seem like we can move fast.
Sure the flight rates of starship will get complaints from locals, but once the satellites are in orbit, the general public loses interest, out of sight out of mind. There's no massive solar field that needs approval, no pushback or resistance to the necessary energy projects like is currently happening for other datacenter projects in the country.
Seems hard to quantify the true costs of terrestrial datacenters right now with such extreme demand and bottlenecks
English

It seems like most of the analysis that attempts to justify data centers in space is a very hand-wavy "imagine the year is 2075, the demand for AI is infinite and energy prices have risen exponentially for 50 years but our rockets are infinitely more efficient"
Chris Combs (iterative design enjoyer)@DrChrisCombs
I have been waiting for someone to provide legitimate numerical analysis that actually justifies the data centers in space hype--still haven't found it

While some automotive cars have had knuckles that wrapped over the top of the tire to reduce kingpin inclination (and scrub radius) in the past, Can-Am flipped the offroad industry upside down when they introduced it in that new Mav R. It caused a flurry of discussion, but seems to have proven itself well
