If you want to make money, real money, find your way to the US. When I was about to finish my PhD in the US, I was looking for jobs everywhere in the world (including Nigeria, believe it or not.) I stumbled on an IOC’s webpage in the UK, where they published their starting salaries for PhDs in Chemical/Petroleum Engineering. It was good money for the UK but it was poor pay in the US. Needless to say, I stopped looking in UK & EU region after that. My starting salary in the US after taxes was more than triple what I would have gotten in the UK after taxes. Same me. Same job. Very different paychecks. Obviously, money shouldn’t be the only reason you choose where to work and live. But if money is a big factor for you, your best bet is to be in the richest country in the world.
