The hardware token uses HMAC authentication by combining a secret key with the current time to generate a code (the number you enter on the website). At the same time, the website uses that same secret key and time to generate its own code. Because both sides use the same secret and the same hashing process, the codes should match. If they do, your login or transaction is approved. If you take too long to enter the code, the time changes, which means a new code is generated on the website side, and the old one becomes invalid. This process relies on hashing, a concept in cryptography (a branch of cybersecurity), to ensure integrity and authentication without ever exposing the secret key.

Can anyone explain to me how hardware tokens work? I have had one for almost 10 years now that I use to login to my bank or confirm a transfer. How does the website that is online know that the numbers generated by an obviously offline device are accurate?
