You're partially right, the US and China have been waging a proxy war for years, and it may remain that way. But Taiwan remains an unknown. It's in the national interest of both the US and China to have Taiwan under their influence. Armed conflict is entirely possible there, it may remain localized like you said. But there's no guarantee.
