My pal Dr. Terence Christian (@AircraftArchaeo) comments on this remarkable find of a #WW2 propeller that may be from one of the aircraft (B-17G 42-97286, Skipper "an" the Kids) we surveyed with @RyanKMcNutt on Beinn Nuis, Arran, for Terence's PhD. nts.org.uk/stories/world-…

Gathering material for lectures in #conflict #archaeology and came across the incredible coolness of Shirley Slade, #WWII US WASP Pilot in this 1943 photo from LIFE. She flew everything from P-39 and P-51s to B-26 Marauders in multiple non-combat roles #v=onepage&q&f=false" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">books.google.com/books?id=MVAEA…

@AircraftArchaeo Thanks. I think also stories of low level ejections where pilot smacked into ground with no chance of chute deployment.

@ProfTonyPollard Kind of. Lockheed's XF-104 engineers' feared high ejection speeds combined w/ the high T-tail would cause pilot-tail impacts so they designed the C1 downward ejection seat. Testing proved the fear baseless and the F-104 was eventually fitted with C2 upward firing ejection seats.

@AircraftArchaeo @BBC_Future Ah, the flying coffin. Is there any truth to the reasoning for this downward exit being tail fin so high it posed risk of slicing ejecting pilot in two in standard upward exit?

YIKES! This is probably the best and clearest example I've ever seen for why battlefield preservation is important. Less than a decade between photos!

Absolutely raging! On the left is #Pinkie battlefield 2012, on the right is today. Same place, different view. In 1, you can see where the Scots vanguard raced for the hill and were pinned down. In 2, you can see houses. Development destroys. End of.

Jack Lieb took his 35 mm black and white camera to Europe to cover the war for Heart’s “News of the Day.” He also took his personal color home video camera to show his family. See D-Day from a different viewpoint. bit.ly/2SVf331 #DDay77
