APC FEMALE DEPUTY GOVERNORS MEET NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, PROF. NENTAWE YILWATDA, ADVOCATE GREATER GENDER INCLUSION IN POLITICS Ahead of the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), members of the APC Female Deputy Governors Forum have intensified advocacy for increased women’s participation in governance, calling for deliberate policies to advance gender inclusion and strengthen women’s roles in Nigerian politics. The call was made during a consultative meeting with the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja on Friday. During the engagement, the Forum urged the party leadership to adopt a comprehensive affirmative action framework ahead of the 2027 general elections. Central to their proposal is the emergence of at least one female governor across each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, as part of broader efforts to deepen inclusivity and equitable political representation. The Forum emphasized that greater participation of women in leadership positions would not only strengthen democratic governance but also harness the vast contributions of women within the party and the nation at large. Responding, the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, aligned with the Forum’s position, describing the current representation of women as currently below 5 percent in the National Assembly which he described as unacceptable. He stressed that the principle of federal character must extend beyond geographical considerations to include gender balance, noting that women constitute nearly 50 percent of both the party’s membership and Nigeria’s population. “If you talk about federal character, it is not just about the state where you come from; it also reflects gender, we will do anything that we can within the National Working Committee to ensure that we improve the representation of women,” je said. The Chairman further encouraged the Forum to formalize its proposals by submitting a memorandum to the party’s Constitution Amendment Committee to ensure that the recommended reforms are legally entrenched within the party’s framework. The meeting was attended by Her Excellency, Hon. Josephine Piyo, alongside other female deputy governors, including Sen. Akon Eyakenyi (Akwa Ibom), Lady Chinyere Ekomaru (Imo), and Prof. Ngozi Odu (Rivers). The engagement underscores the APC’s ongoing consultations aimed at strengthening internal democracy, promoting inclusivity, and positioning women for greater leadership responsibilities within Nigeria’s political landscape.
