Russian opposition figures have repeatedly called for dialogue that goes beyond human rights to encompass the future of Russia itself. Vladimir Kara-Murza has urged the West to «recognize the existence of another Russia» and discuss the country’s post-Putin architecture. Mikhail Khodorkovsky has openly criticized the fact that regime change has been taken off the table and has called for the opposition to be treated as a political partner. Garry Kasparov has emphasized the need for recognized representation of the anti-Putin emigration so that systematic cooperation can occur. Against this background, interaction limited to a human-rights agenda inevitably feels inadequate to many in the opposition. The difficulty is that these expectations rest on the opposition’s self-image as the natural ally of Ukraine and the West. As of 2026 the reality is different. Rhetorically, that role may be acknowledged. In practice, both Ukraine and European countries act first according to their own national interests. The most realistic path for the Russian political emigration is therefore to accept that logic and concentrate on the relatively narrow areas where its interests and those of its Western partners objectively coincide. Even there, the margin for maneuvers is tight: overly close identification with European or American structures risks permanently alienating the very domestic constituency the opposition hopes one day to represent. A sober take on the "Putin's war vs. Russians' war" debate—and the role the Russian opposition has played, or could have played, in uniting with the West and Ukraine against Russia. The major elephant in the room is the approach Western governments took toward a "regime change in Russia" policy that displeases both Russian opposition in exile and Ukraine. "On the one hand, Western leaders see that the regime inside Russia has hardened considerably over the years of war, making large-scale domestic protest increasingly improbable. On the other, the Europe-U.S. strategy from 2022 to 2025 has been consistent: contain Russia without destabilizing it politically. The fear of uncontrolled instability in a nuclear-armed state is genuine and was clearly visible in the cautious Western reaction to Yevgeny Prigozhin’s mutiny—especially Washington’s. Western policy toward Russians since 2022 must be understood in this context. Many Russian émigrés and observers have rightly criticized Western governments for blanket sanctions, citizenship-based discrimination and the effective sealing off of Russian capital and talent inside the country. The facts, however, are clear: neither Europeans nor Americans were ever seriously interested in regime change in Russia. They have said so openly and consistently. Their real objective has been to limit Russia’s military and economic power, reduce the risks it poses, and avoid triggering domestic chaos or a violent struggle for power. In this framework, opposition Russians in exile have found themselves caught between two fires: persecuted by the Russian state on one side and engaged by Western partners almost exclusively on human-rights and political-prisoner issues on the other. Вижу бредовые заголовки новостей и нелепые комментарии по поводу перспективы лишения Леонида Волкова ВНЖ Литвы. Я в значительной степени не разделяю позиций, высказанных Волковым, а само его сообщение, ставшее достоянием гласности, его модальность и тональность, кажутся мне весьма неуместными. Но я уже почти четыре года живу в Литве, с благодарностью и с уважением отношусь к позициям литовского общества и государства в отношении путинской агрессии против Украины и в отношении российских противников войны и диктатуры. И исходя из этого уважения и понимания, я не думаю, что перспективы лишения Волкова ВНЖ Литвы реальны. Как ни относись к его словам в частном сообщении, они никаким образом не представляют ни угрозы национальной безопасности Литвы, ни посягательства на суверенитет Украины, ни, тем более, поддержки агрессии. Критика россиянами конкретных украинских политических и государственных деятелей в ситуации войны может быть неуместной (и, на мой взгляд, является таковой), но эта неуместность, конечно, не должна быть основанием для репрессий. И я практически уверен, что и не будет.

Антипутинская оппозиция окончательно превратилась в антироссийскую. Те люди, которые когда-то топили за честные выборы и борьбу с коррупцией, теперь топят за проигрыш в войне, этнические чистки в Крыму и на Донбассе (они называют это границы 1991 года), выплату репараций (потому что ЕС надо легитимиризовать погашение 90-миллиардного кредита Украине российскими деньгами), и суды над "военными преступниками" - читай, над всеми, кто хоть как-то состоялся. Делают они это, чтобы доказать свою лояльность брюссельским чиновникам, которые прямо объявили Россию важным врагом и, не имея особых средств с ней сражаться, используют что могут, - в частности, подвернувшуюся под руку эмиграцию. Толку от нее не много, но ведь и стоит недорого. Демонстрирует это, увы, только одно. Что того Запада, в который с 1991 стремилась российская элита - и думала, что ее возьмут, если она будет стараться изо всех сил, - просто не существует. Есть сложная построенная США система буферных государств, которая с самого начала исключала РФ и была нацелена на то, чтобы переварить и включить отколовшиеся от Российской империи/СССР куски. У этих стран и бюрократий есть свои интересы - вполне легитимные. Но служение, с истовым отрывом жопы, интересам европейских бюрократий не есть служение "общечеловеческим ценностям". Это просто низкопоклонство перед новым Коминтерном и работа новыми Отто Куусиненами.
