No Palm Sunday in Syria for fear of Jihadism Church leaders have canceled Palm Sunday celebrations in Damascus due to fears of attacks by jihadist militias and in protest of what they see as inadequate government protection. Syria, one of the earliest regions to receive Christianity after ancient Israel and Phoenician Lebanon, has a long and rich Christian history. Damascus was once a major center of Christianity, predating the prominence of Constantinople and Rome. Despite centuries under various caliphates and sultanates, numerous churches and patriarchates endured. Today, however, Syrian Christian children will not walk the streets of Damascus with their parents, carrying olive branches and candles to mark Palm Sunday. Repeated attacks by jihadist groups on churches and Christian towns have put the community at serious risk. I have instructed the relevant authorities that Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch, be granted full and immediate access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Over the past several days, Iran has repeatedly targeted the holy sites of all three monotheistic religions in Jerusalem with ballistic missiles. In one strike, missile fragments crashed meters from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. To protect worshippers, Israel asked members of all faiths to temporarily abstain from worshipping at the Christian, Muslim and Jewish holy sites in Jerusalem’s Old City. Today, out of special concern for his safety, Cardinal Pizzaballa was asked to refrain from holding mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Even though I understand this concern, as soon as I learned about the incident with Cardinal Pizzaballa, I instructed the authorities to enable the Patriarch to hold services as he wishes.
Netanyahu ha impedido a los católicos celebrar el Domingo de Ramos en los Lugares Santos de Jerusalén. Sin explicación alguna. Sin razones ni motivos. Desde el Gobierno de España condenamos este ataque injustificado a la libertad religiosa y exigimos a Israel que respete la diversidad de credos y el derecho internacional. Porque sin tolerancia es imposible convivir.
