I'm creating a philosophy of videogames class next year based on Jon Cogburn's text "Philosophy Through Video Games," Kendall Walton's "Mimesis as Make-Believe," and Bernard Suits' "The Grasshopper." I'm still not sure what games will be discussed, but here are some ideas: 1/3

@doxntme @ozeniken @ad64701 Ok, we'll change it to where there's a big curtain and by pressing the button then you pass through and get strapped on the tracks. This response is wholly unconvincing if it was to demonstrate there was a difference lol

@notsoErudite @IamSean90 I think if it's the entire world, the blue is likely to succeed and you should pick blue. But if it's an individualist community or culture, or you knew most of the people were Ayn Rand lovers then blue is not succeeding at all. Red is better here.

@bedriddenmaiden Even thousands of years ago. Sappho wrote great poems that resonate with our emotions today.

what i love about reading literary fiction is that someone’s words from over 100 years ago still resonate as if they were written today

@Benthamsbulldog My thing is, why do continentals become so influential and popular, moreso than analytics, if they are so unreadable and nebulous? Anyone can write in their nebulous and confusing way. That won't make you influential.

I don’t understand—and I mean this literally, I *do not understand* and I want to know others’ views—the strict norms against doxxing. I get posting someone’s address or something, that’s just inciting harassment. But if a person is a major-ish figure and we’re just talking about sharing their name, what’s the problem? I guess it just seems like wanting to be influential *and* anonymous is a big ask, and people knowing who you are isn’t a big deal, so I don’t see why it’s in-principle-wrong to reveal such a figure’s identity if such is of public interest. I think people will get mad at me if I don’t reiterate this enough, so just to stress, I’m not trying to coyly defend anything anyone is doing. I think it is reasonably likely someone will reply with a good argument and I’ll just be like “Okay, makes sense.”

I get that the joke is making fun of robots and their inability to perceive things as a human would, but scenarios like this have genuinely happened to me many times throughout my life and people have gotten angry at me because they thought that I was being a smart aleck. As a kid, it confused the crap out of me and all I could think was, "Why am I in trouble? I did what you told me to do!" This is a big reason I try not to yell "common sense" as a way to dismiss actions. There are well-meaning people out there who follow logic, just not everyone else's logic. Hanlon's razor and all that.

@PAHoyeck Maybe I should have specified mother tongue, but regardless I agree with you still. I'm saying we do a weird tendency of naming identities that can lead to absurd conclusions. Arabic was just an example of this I think.

@AjskrapAlex I really don't think this is true. Persians who speak Arabic aren't Arabs! I actually debated using this as one of my examples.

I find it so perplexing how English speakers will call French-speakers "French" even when they aren't from France. Are Americans English because they speak English? Are Mexicans Spanish because they speak Spanish?
