Happened with my cousin . Parents gave her jewellery on wedding. MIL took it from her & kept it in her locker. She couldn’t refuse out of respect. Now the divorce is about to get finalised (on charges of harassment from husband & fam) & the gold stays with the MIL.

From Divorce to 16 Guys Yesterday I met one of my friends whose divorce happened in 2023. Her husband was so toxic that he completely changed her from the inside. The girl who was once cultured, simple, and someone who valued relationships today she smokes, drinks, shows up at nightclubs every weekend. Goes to hotels daily. She herself told me that in the last 2 years, she’s had 13 boyfriends, and right now she has 3 boyfriends. She says Life is just two days, enjoy it fully, one day we’ll all die anyway. But to tell the truth I absolutely don’t like this kind of life. Do you really like this kind of life?

This morning while having breakfast, a conversation shifted to Dowry Deaths and cruelty of men against their wives. My mum and I were sitting and eating mangoes; suddenly a marriage talk of one of my cousins popped up and then later the talk shifted towards dowry deaths happening these days. And on saturday, a 23 year old lady with 2 kids of 2 years and 1 year, along with her brother and dadi, came to my mom to file a case against the husband for dowry and harassment. A week ago, her husband kicked her in her belly multiple times in the wife's paternal home when he went to take her back home. Everyone, including her mother, brother and dadi, was at home, and the husband beat her mercilessly. Also, when she was coming to her maternal home 10 days ago, he left his wife 5-6 km away from the home and she, carrying 2 kids in this 45 degree heat, went to her mother's home by foot. And last month he also kicked her out of his house for an entire night; she lived outside the home and the next day he shut her in the bathroom. Reason: Demanding 3 acres of land and 5 lakh rupees...and women's families are poor people; they are villagers, her brother works in a power plant for 15000 per month. and 4 days ago, he kicked her out of home and she is living at her mother's home and on saturday her brother along with her came to my mother for advice and a lawyer to file a case. In this situation, there are 3 options: 1. File a case against the husband for domestic violence. 2. Take divorce and save her life, because he is going to eventually ki*l her. 3. File for maintenance and live with parents. My mother advised her to go for the 3rd option. I asked my mom the reason: why not file a a case or take a divorce? 1. Domestic violence cases are bailable offences with less than 3 years of jail time... The husband will get bail within a day and the case will be dragged on for at least 10 years and he will only be punished in an appeal, so there is no guarantee. women side are poor people; they can't afford it and it can be counterproductive. 2. Taking a divorce is also not good, considering society; she is 23, illiterate, has 2 kids, and has no income. For her entire life, she will be a burden and she will be facing hatred. People don't accept divorcees with kids for another marriage; it's a big gamble. 3. Maintenance – my mum said go for maintenance, don't divorce, just leave the home and stay with parents. You have kids and yourself to take care of. Monthly maintenance will be ordered by the court within 3 months, because these cases are now being referred to fast-track family courts. -------------- My mother has been a criminal lawyer for 20 years now. I have heard more than 1000s of cases till date...on a daily basis we discuss things. and I want to share some of the real-life law stories happening in the tier 3 city and most of the cases are from adjacent villages. So from today on you will hear such real life case stories, i'll try to write atleast 2-3 every week. ------------ Also, this thing, the daily discussion between my father and mother while cooking food together, has fascinated me for years. 2 years ago, graduating in IT in 2021, working in Marketing and branding, I also decided to pursue law just to appear in court as a counsel with my mum... 3 semesters have been completed and yeah, it's going to be fun. 🤩 Do let me know your own analysis in comments i would gladly respond to each one of you.
