In the BG — Krishna teaches Arjuna that inner realization is not the destination, but the foundation from which right action is to be performed. He did not teach Arjuna to escape the world, he did not teach him to dissolve into stillness forever, but he asked him to return to the battlefield and pick up his weapon to fight.

@Akara__1 Not every silence is empty…some silences are so full, they hold creation within them. When He withdraws into stillness, it isn’t absence…it’s the moment before everything begins again. Mahadev doesn’t seek attention, yet all existence turns toward him. 🙏🏻

▫️Remembering Debala Mitra, the pioneering Indian archaeologist who became the first woman Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). In an era when archaeology was overwhelmingly male-dominated, Mitra didn’t just participate — she led groundbreaking excavations, authored definitive books on Buddhist monuments, and transformed how we understand eastern India’s rich heritage. From unearthing massive monastic complexes in Odisha to championing conservation and even repatriating stolen artifacts, her legacy continues to inspire. ▫️Born on 14 December 1925 in Khulna (now Bangladesh) into a middle-class Kayastha family, Mitra completed her early schooling in Khulna and Calcutta. She earned an M.A. in Ancient Indian History and Culture from the University of Calcutta in 1946 (with a silver medal), studied Art of Cambodia at the École du Louvre in Paris, and received her Ph.D. from Calcutta University in 1975 for her thesis on the submerged Temple of Telkupi in West Bengal. ▫️She joined the ASI in 1952 and rose steadily: Superintendent of the Eastern Circle, Additional Director General, and finally DG. She excavated at Rupar, Maski, and Tamluk, then led independent projects at Jaugada, Udayagiri, Khandagiri, and more. A specialist in Buddhist art and eastern Indian archaeology, she was the first woman to direct major Buddhist site excavations. ▫️Landmark Achievements: 🔹️Ratnagiri Excavations (1958–1961): Her most celebrated work revealed a flourishing 5th–13th century Buddhist complex — complete with a grand stupa, monasteries, carved gateways, Buddha statues, and bronze treasures. This site is part of Odisha’s iconic “Diamond Triangle.” 🔹️Explored Nepalese Buddhist sites including Tilaurakot, Kodan, Lumbini, and Nigali Sagar. 🔹️Conservation leader: Preserved mosques in Murshidabad and Gaur, temples in Bishnupur, and structures damaged by earthquakes in Assam. 🔹️Key role in the Lumbini Development Project and international forums. Notably, her efforts helped return an 8th-century Buddha statue from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to Bodh Gaya. ▫️Influential Publications: 🔹️Konarak (1968) 🔹️Buddhist Monuments (1971) — a classic on stupas, monasteries, and iconography 🔹️Bronzes from Achutrajpur, Orissa (1978) 🔹️Ratnagiri: 1958-61, Ajanta, Sanchi, Telkupi, and multiple ASI Memoirs & Reviews. Her writings remain essential references for scholars, blending rigorous fieldwork with deep insights into Buddhist architecture and patronage.Enduring LegacyAs DG, Mitra strengthened documentation, conservation techniques, and nationwide coordination. Dr. Debala Mitra proved that determination and scholarship can rewrite history, quite literally. Her story is a powerful reminder that pioneering women have always been at the forefront of uncovering India’s glorious past.
