Today marks the anniversary of the death of legendary Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II. He ended the crumbling Eastern Roman Empire and established Istanbul as a new global financial and cultural hub. He expanded Ottoman rule across Serbia, Bosnia, Morea, Albania, Wallachia, and unified Turkish world in Anatolia by defeating rival Turkish principalities. He strengthened the Ottoman navy, taking strategic ports in the Black Sea and Mediterranean, and positioned the empire as a maritime power. He invested heavily in infrastructure and culture in the Empire, restoring Istanbul after 1453, commissioning major works like Topkapı Palace, supporting mosques, bridges, markets, and scholarly institutions. He brought mathematicians, astronomers, and other Turkic scholars around the world to the empire.

We all know that tomatoes reached Europe in 16th century but Turks literally found America long before Columbus. That’s how the nomadic horse riders were growing tomatoes on the back of their horses for their Turkish salad. They also found feta cheese. Maybe from horse “milk”.
