Everyone's making extreme predictions about the future of software, and I feel left out. So here it is: Everything will stay roughly the same. The things that were useful before now will remain useful after now.

Design work relies on "creative energy", which is a short-hand for motivation, morale, inspiration, care, willingness, etc. Some conversations you have at work raise your creative energy, and some lower it.

@pablostanley yeah :/ today i watched someone prompt an agent to replace an image with another image (which they had to find on their machine and attach to their prompt) as opposed to > click the 'choose file' button that lives directly in the tool > select the same jpg > press 'enter' key

separate observation: it's odd to me that figma exposing the variable value in this dialogue. changing the value here also doesn't affect the var's value in the collection, so what is it?

anyone using variables for handling visual changes on interactions instead of variants? had a question from a reader about this, and it's not something i've explored much myself

@designmistik ah, no access to smart animate... hadn't considered that. yeah for some teams, maybe a non-issue

@AlPackah We had a run at this and wouldn’t recommend it in Figma. The interaction of setting a variable is always instant so although you get the benefit of not having variants you don’t get the same look and feel. It depends on how you use the DS.

@designmistik rn i'm thinking a size prop on each component is the best way to do it. or a closed set of number variables, like you described, specially designated for controlling icon size

how many people have a "size" prop on their icon components?

instinct tells me that setting a mode to any layer within a main component is a bad idea. wdyt?

@designmistik the 2 variants being 16px and 24px, right? i have another weird idea to run by you... icon sizes as variable modes 👀 can you see issues with this?

@AlPackah I think this is again a thing that is specific to the rules of the DS. In our case, it is a hard rule that we don’t scale (up or down) the icons, just use the given components. Regarding storing, each component has 2 variants. At export they are saved as 2 files.

Road conditions remain challenging after the storm. Check out Team Metro crews out in DC clearing bus bays and stops to restore service. We’re coordinating closely with DC, Maryland, & Virginia as work continues across the region. Thank you for your patience.

NEW: Coating of snow possible this afternoon/evening, coinciding with rush hour Scattered snow showers and flurries sweeping through the area between midafternoon and this evening could produce a coating and complicate the evening rush hour. Snow shouldn’t last in any one area more than an hour or two but, as cold as it is, whatever falls will accumulate. “If this threat does materialize during this evening’s rush-hour, any untreated roads could quickly turn snow covered and slippery,” the National Weather Service wrote in a special statement. “This could lead to dangerous traveling conditions.” Short-term models agree that the hit-or-miss activity is probable starting around 3 p.m. in the vicinity of Frederick, Maryland, and Leesburg, Virginia, before reaching the Beltway area around 4 or 5 p.m. The snow showers will probably reach areas south and east of the Beltway between 6 and 7 p.m. and then exit areas near the bay and Southern Maryland by 9 p.m. or so.

Theory: a designer's output quality will tend towards the quality expectation of their employer, even if the designer has higher personal quality standards.

@Jopzik @designmistik interesting!! so designers use the flattened/filled shape, and devs get an export of the live stroke paths? curious how you're storing these. separate components?

@AlPackah @designmistik If it's a icon library that we made we use to have our "dev" version with stroke, but when we publish the library they are flatten. This due to in code sometimes they don't use the correct stroke width and we try to prevent inconsistencies

@designmistik where i'm going with this whole thing (and line of questions) is trying to see if anyone is using the Scale (K) tool to let consumers size icons up and down AND keep strokes live (but scale proportionately). i have a theory that this works, but real life execution is always diff
