Crazy Taxi (1999) by Sega flipped the racing genre on its head by focusing on time-based fares instead of finishing positions. Designed by Kenji Kanno, the goal was simple: pick up passengers and deliver them as fast, and as wildly, as possible, rewarding risky driving like near-misses, jumps, and drifting with higher tips. The game runs on Sega’s Naomi hardware, essentially arcade-powered Dreamcast tech, which allowed for a large, open city with minimal loading. Its intuitive arrow system guided players without breaking the flow, keeping the action constant and easy to pick up but hard to master. A huge part of its identity comes from the licensed soundtrack, featuring bands like The Offspring and Bad Religion, which perfectly matched the chaotic, high-energy gameplay. Combined with real-world-style locations and exaggerated physics, Crazy Taxi became one of the most iconic arcade experiences of its era.
