Strength Training and Blood Pressure I was giving guidance to someone who lives overseas, a very busy professional. He had been told he had “high blood pressure” and his doctor was considering medications. What was actually going on, was that he was significantly insulin resistant and had not been taking good care of himself. No doctor had ever mentioned insulin resistance to him, or made any attempt to seriously address his lifestyle. We worked on a number of things, but the # 1 thing which actually boosted his physical and mental health, and significantly improved his blood pressure— was a structured strength training routine. We designed a very doable program around his busy schedule (I’m also a certified personal trainer as well as being a doctor!). Anyway, within weeks, his blood pressure was doing better, and he was feeling more energetic and stronger as well— with a good amount of fat loss. Hopefully this man is saved from a lifetime of medications and being plugged into the medical industrial complex. That is always my goal for anyone, and I hope he keeps up the excellent work (I know he will!). Bottom line: don’t underestimate the power of a strength training routine. This doesn’t mean becoming a bodybuilder, it simply means becoming more toned and increasing some muscle mass. Physical health, mental health, and it’s quite addictive to once you start feeling stronger and having more energy.
