NEW: Mesa man dies in police custody after fleeing bicycle stop and resisting arrest On April 4, 2026, around 8:30 p.m. near Dobson Road and University Drive in Mesa, Arizona, officers attempted to stop 52-year-old Eric Baker for riding a bicycle without a light. Baker fled into an apartment complex, crashed, and a 90-second struggle ensued in which he allegedly resisted arrest by kicking at officers. Officers used physical strikes and deployed Tasers to gain control. Baker was arrested for an active felony warrant and assault on an officer. Shortly after being handcuffed, officers requested medical aid for Baker, who was acting erratically. He was transported by the Mesa Fire Department but became unresponsive and pronounced dead at the hospital.
