@SandyofSuffolk Literally nobody said Jewish people can't go to a football match in Birmingham. Supporters of a club which has, we are told, many Arab fans, could not go. Not even Tommy Robinson, their newest fan, whose four-year ban from football stadiums recently expired.

We must all be tolerant of Muslims worshipping in public. But Jewish people can't go to a football match in Birmingham. See the hypocrisy now.

@faisalislam @FT There clearly is going to be some kind of shock. I'm not suggesting prices are not going up at all. But the world ain't caving in. Both Covid and the Ukraine war were far bigger shocks.

Having said all that, a lot of reports are putting up the most eye-catching figures they can find. Even the @FT reports gas prices in Europe shot up 30% today. Fake News! The main benchmarks I could find have that closer to around 9%. And no, all the hearing in Europe is not about to switch off. These graphs are for the EU, but the UK dependence on Qatari LNG is even lower.

“A wake up call” the CEO of Britain’s biggest domestic energy firm told me last night about the possibility of long term impact to global gas and oil infrastructure… but he pointed to electrification as the main lesson, while domestic gas would be preferable to shipped gas:

“wake-up call that gets us to electrify more of our economy and get more of our energy from homegrown sources.”

"The irony is, right now, we're emailing millions of customers saying their energy prices are going to fall..."
"You can't protect yourself against these global markets forever."
"Traders are really worried about how long it's going to take these facilities to get back online."
"Our electricity system's too inefficient. We need to reform that markets so that people get the benefits of our homegrown resources."
“my own view is that shipping gas around the world is more inefficient and has more leaks of methane than if you use local gas. But we shouldn't kid ourselves. North Sea gas wouldn't meaningfully bring the price down because we're paying the global price. If we got more out of the North Sea, it would simply be sold to other countries at these very high prices or here at these high prices. And we can't kid ourselves we're going to be self-sufficient in gas again. What we can do is have a much cheaper approach to electricity than we have today. Our electricity system's too inefficient. We need to reform that markets so that people get the benefits of our homegrown resources.

"The irony is, right now, we're emailing millions of customers saying their energy prices are going to fall..." Greg Jackson, CEO of Octopus Energy, says energy prices could be impacted if disruption in the Strait of Hormuz "is not over quite quickly". #Newsnight

@AlanVRK Thankfully far enough to never go there. I am not a Christian, I have no interest in their gatherings and I've not seen anything like that, I asked a question. What you saying OMG for like some teenage schoolgirl? I asked a simple question, David got his knickers in a twist.

Too many are too polite to say this. But mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination. The adhan - which declares there is no god but allah and Muhammad is his messenger - is, when called in a public place, a declaration of domination. Perform these rituals in mosques if you wish. But they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions. And given their explicit repudiation of Christianity they certainly do not belong in our churches and cathedrals. I am not suggesting everybody at Trafalgar Square last night is an Islamist. But the domination of public places is straight from the Islamist playbook. Trafalgar Square belongs to all of us. It is a national memorial to our independence and our salvation. Last night was not like a televised football match or a St Patrick’s Day celebration. It was an act of domination and therefore division. It shouldn’t happen again.

@FT WTI and Brent tell you things are tight, but the Dubai/Oman blowout is what really shows how distorted the whole energy setup has gotten. That’s where it starts going from oil headline to broader macro problem.

The jumps in the Brent and West Texas Intermediate oil price benchmarks actually understate the degree of dislocation, writes Alphaville's Robin Wigglesworth. Look at the long-term prices of Dubai and Omani oil to see the bigger picture: ft.trib.al/tTKXmCO

@FT I'm not sure how meaningful the Dubai benchmark even is at the moment if ships aren't moving. What is it being marked to if no one is loading oil onto tankers in Dubai? I guess they have a fallback.

Yes there is a shortage of oil in Asia, and yes *some* of the Asian refineries want to replace Dubai Crude with a similar type of crude because that's what they're set up to handle. And indeed you can't get oil from Norway to India or China in a day, so prices for what there is are very high.

@DAaronovitch @NJ_Timothy @Iromg Then you could easily give me an example? I've no dog in this fight, all brands of religion are equally as batshit, but I have never seen this kind of thing, so I asked where, you gave me Google. Well done you David.

@NJ_Timothy Nick, where was your outrage (and tweet/post) when this happened in Trafalgar Square in 2024? Kemi @KemiBadenoch, have a word with your MP.

@NJ_Timothy @AnImminentKing @portraitinflesh I wouldn't actually mind having a bit less clutter in the square generally, but anything that annoys you can't be all bad. I can't say I've ever even noticed any Muslim prayers going on, but I've certainly seen the barmy evangelicals plenty often enough.
