A lot of people misinterpret Misato’s motivations and intentions.
Misato by definition isn’t a pedophile, but she is a predator.
Obviously morally the distinction doesn’t matter, but psychologically it’s important. When she makes a pass at Shinji or kisses him in EOE she’s not doing so because she sexually desires him.
The way she has always dealt with her trauma is by drowning it in alcohol and shallow sex. That’s how she deals with her issues, so when she wants to comfort Shinji she can’t be the mother he needs and defaults to the only form of “comfort” she knows.
This is also one reason why in Rebuilds she won’t see her son. She knows she’s not cut out to be a mother.
Of course I’m not justifying the action, but Evangelion is about hurt people hurting other people, the Hedgehog dilemma. Her intentions were pure but her methods were diabolical.

Eva fans might genuinely be the most brain dead people on earth because the fact that this scene (And Misato’s whole character honestly) are still seen the way they are genuinely makes me lose faith in humanity’s ability to interpret art

そういえば海外ではこのシーンの台詞、シンジが手に入らないならあんたなんかいらない的なセリフになってるみたいですけど、これ日本語だと「シンジが全部私のモノにならないなら、私、何もいらない」なので
むしろ意味的には英語訳の逆になるような非常にめんどくさい言い回しで翻訳が難しい…
シンジの全てが手に入らないならシンジなんていらないではなく、私(アスカ自身)を含めた何もかも全てがいらない的な意味が多分正確だと思うけど、海外ではどういう意味で捉えられてるのか気になる
(日本語でもすごく曖昧な表現にしてあるけど、何故シンジに二度も首に手をかけられても抵抗しなかったのか、何故最後シンジの頬を撫でたのかと合わせると意味が限定される）
他にも「抱きしめてもくれない」からの旧劇アスカの「いくじなし」の台詞とかも海外ではどう訳してるか聞いてみたい
日本語だとこのシチュエーションでこの台詞の意味は一つなのだけど、いくじなし単体を訳すだけだと否定になっちゃうので

She likes Shinji but is too afraid of being weak and vulnerable, so she disguises the kiss as something casual and meaningless. Shinji wants to kiss Asuka but because of her abrasive walls she puts up gets mixed signals from her. Leaving him confused, on top of the fact he only ever does things when he’s ordered too. He won’t just do what he wants. Asuka wants him to reciprocate, to get passionate and show he desires her but he doesn’t. He just stands there. So to mask her embarrassment Asuka pretends that it was disgusting. Great scene I don’t understand how it can be trashy. It’s two people with trauma struggling to connect and express their feelings for each other.
